When plugs make sense
Plugs are small, rooted pieces of turf grown in trays. They take faster than seed and spread into a solid lawn.
- Repairing bare spots once you have fixed the cause, such as insects, disease or dog urine
- Areas far smaller than a pallet, where no one nearby sells single pieces
- Sites a pallet cannot reach
- Grasses that are not sold as seed, such as Zoysia and St. Augustine
- Testing a grass in your own sun, shade and rain before you sod
How to plant plugs
- Dig a hole 3 in deep for each plug, spacing them 12 to 16 in apart.
- If you like, add 1 teaspoon of organic fertilizer to each hole.
- Set each plug in its hole, press it in firmly and fill any gaps with soil.
- Water until the soil is saturated.
- Water daily until the plugs have rooted, then twice a week.
