Can you lay new sod during winter?

This is a question we get asked often. And the answer is YES!

Laying sod in the southeast during the winter months offers numerous advantages for homeowners and landscapers alike.

While the grass may appear brown and dormant above ground, the roots below the surface remain very much alive, spreading and establishing themselves in the soil. This head start allows the sod to green up rapidly come springtime, rewarding you with a lush, vibrant lawn as soon as the warm weather returns.

Winter installation also gives the sod ample time to take root before having to contend with the harsh summer heat and drier conditions. The cooler temperatures are easier on the grass and the increased rainfall helps the sod stay moist with less need for intensive watering.

Dormant sod is less perishable as well, expanding your window for installation.

And with landscapers and sod farms typically less busy during the winter months, you may find it easier to schedule your project and take advantage of off-season pricing. So while it may be tempting to wait until spring to lay your sod, a winter installation in the southeast will set your lawn up for success and have it looking its best in no time.
